Is Etsy Too Saturated in 2026? An Honest Answer With Numbers

By Mouhcine El Aboudi · August 25, 2026 · AI Shopping SEO Etsy SEO Market Data
Is Etsy too saturated in 2026, showing 87 million active buyers, 5.7 million active sellers and over 100 million live listings

Every week someone asks whether Etsy is too saturated to bother with in 2026. The answers are almost always opinions. Etsy publishes enough real data to settle most of the question, so this guide uses those numbers instead — and the honest conclusion is more useful than either "it's dead" or "there's room for everyone".

Correction, August 2026

An earlier version of this article said Etsy does not publish search volume. That is no longer accurate, and the sections below have been rewritten. Etsy publishes its own search data free in Shop Manager → Stats → Marketplace insights: a searches count, a competing-listings count, a conversion-rate band and a median purchase price range, with metered lookups. Full detail and screenshots: Etsy finally publishes its own search data.

Two things need separating before the numbers make sense. Saturation of supply is how many sellers and listings are competing. Saturation of demand is whether buyers are still spending. Sellers use one word for both, which is why the debate never resolves. They are moving in different directions.

What Etsy actually reports

These figures come from Etsy's own annual report and quarterly shareholder letters, not from third-party estimates.

Metric Latest reported Direction
Active buyers (Etsy marketplace) About 87 million Slightly down year over year, up sequentially
Active sellers About 5.7 million Growing
GMS per active buyer (trailing 12 months) USD 124 Up about 2.8% year over year
Live listings on the marketplace More than 100 million Growing
Average purchase days per buyer, per year About 3 Roughly half of buyers purchase once a year
Habitual buyers About 7% of buyers, around 40% of sales Cohort recently stabilising

The one calculation that answers the question

Put the two sides of the marketplace next to each other. Roughly 87 million buyers and roughly 5.7 million sellers works out at about 15 buyers per seller. Those buyers spend about USD 124 each per year across the entire platform.

Multiply it out and the average seller's theoretical share is somewhere in the region of a couple of thousand dollars of sales per year — and averages are misleading in a market this skewed, because a small minority of shops take a disproportionate share of it. That is the real answer to "is Etsy saturated". Not dead. But absolutely not a market where an average listing earns an average income.

The uncomfortable part

Seller numbers are growing while buyer numbers are roughly flat. That single divergence is the entire saturation story. It means impressions per listing structurally decline over time no matter how good you are, because the same demand is being divided among more supply every quarter.

Etsy supply and demand divergence: 5.7 million sellers growing against 87 million buyers staying flat, with 124 dollars spent per buyer per year and about 15 buyers per seller

Read that carefully, because the wrong conclusion is the easy one to draw. If supply is rising and demand is flat, then being seen more is a shrinking lever and converting better is not. Your listing content is under your control, but competing offers, prices and trust signals can still affect whether a visitor buys.

The number that quietly contradicts the doom

Demand is not collapsing. GMS per active buyer went up to about USD 124, buyer counts have stopped falling and grew sequentially, and the habitual and repeat cohorts recently showed their first sequential growth in years. Etsy's marketplace sales have been growing again.

So the platform is not the problem. The buyers still exist and are spending slightly more each. What changed is how many people are competing for their attention.

This is why "Etsy is saturated" and "people are making money on Etsy" are both true statements at the same time, and why the argument over which one is correct goes nowhere.

Category saturation versus keyword saturation

Here is where the word "saturated" does the most damage. It is applied to categories, but competition happens at the level of a search query.

"Planners" is saturated. "Wall art" is saturated. "Wedding invitations" is saturated. None of that tells you anything, because no shopper searches for a category and buys the first result. They search for something specific and buy the closest match.

Saturated framing Workable framing
Budget planner Budget planner for irregular freelance income
Wedding timeline template Outdoor ceremony wedding day timeline with weather backup plan
Resume template Resume template for career changers with employment gaps
Teacher printables Substitute teacher emergency lesson pack, grade 3

Narrowing reduces how many people could possibly want your product and raises the share of them who buy it. For a shop with no reviews and no history, that trade is almost always worth making, because you cannot win a broad query against a shop with ten thousand sales and you do not need to.

How to measure saturation yourself, honestly

Start with Etsy's own numbers, because Etsy now publishes search data itself and it is free. In Shop Manager → Stats → Marketplace insights you can look up a keyword and read four things measured from Etsy's own records: how many searches that term received, how many listings are competing for them, a conversion-rate band for the query, and the median purchase price range buyers actually paid. There is no minimum sales requirement, and the lookups are metered rather than unlimited.

That changes how third-party numbers should be read, without making them worthless. An absolute monthly-searches figure inside a keyword tool is still a model built on external proxies rather than a reading of Etsy's records — useful for comparing terms against each other, weak as a statement of fact. Etsy's own panel hedges as well: it gives a conversion band, not a percentage. The difference is what each one is hedging about. Here is the full walkthrough of Marketplace Insights and the three numbers it gives you.

And here is what you can still measure by hand, for free, with no tool at all:

  1. Supply. Search your exact keyword on Etsy and read the result count. That number is real. It is the clearest saturation signal available to you.
  2. Quality of the competition. Look at the first row of results, not the count. Twenty thousand mediocre listings is a friendlier market than two hundred excellent ones.
  3. Whether the winners are entrenched. Open the top few shops and look at their review counts. If the front page is all ten-thousand-sale shops, that query is closed to you today. If there are shops with a few dozen sales ranking, it is open.
  4. Relative interest over time. Use Google Trends for the direction of a term. Not Etsy volume, but real evidence of whether interest is rising or dying.
  5. Whether the need is specific enough to be worded. If you cannot write the exact phrase a buyer would type, the niche is not defined yet — and an undefined niche is not a niche.

Etsy's own buyer research is worth internalising: a large share of buyers arrive with a specific item in mind, and a further large share are looking for something custom or personalised. Comparatively few are simply browsing for inspiration. That is a search-driven, specificity-rewarding marketplace, which is precisely why niching down beats broadening out.

So should you start a shop in 2026?

A straight answer, split by situation.

  • You want a general store covering a popular category: no. Supply growth guarantees your impressions per listing decay, and you have no defence.
  • You want to sell what is already selling, slightly cheaper: no. Price is the only lever you would have, and it is the one lever that cannot be defended.
  • You have a specific buyer whose need you can describe in one sentence: yes. This is the entire game, and the 15-buyers-per-seller math stops mattering, because you are not competing for all of them.
  • You have an existing audience anywhere off Etsy: yes, strongly. External traffic sidesteps the supply problem completely.
  • You expect passive income from listing volume: no. That model is what created the saturation this page measures.

What the saturation math means for your next move

If supply is growing and demand is flat, the leverage moves to three places, in this order.

  1. Conversion. The same traffic, converting better, is growth that no competitor can take from you. This is the highest-return work available to a small shop, and the least glamorous. Start with why your listing gets views but no sales.
  2. Specificity. Fewer, sharper listings aimed at a buyer you can name, beating twenty broad ones. Attributes and tags are how you tell Etsy exactly who you are for — see tags versus attributes.
  3. External traffic. Anything that brings buyers from outside Etsy is exempt from the supply problem entirely.

The part of the math that is about to change

All of the above assumes shoppers find you the way they always have: by typing into a search box and scanning a grid. That assumption is starting to loosen, and it changes what "competition" means.

Etsy partnered with OpenAI in September 2025 so shoppers in the United States can discover and buy Etsy items inside ChatGPT. In January 2026 it announced a partnership with Google, built on the Universal Commerce Protocol, letting signed-in US users buy some Etsy items directly inside Google's AI Mode and the Gemini app.

The honest scale, again from Etsy: this agentic-AI traffic grew roughly fifteen times year over year, but from a very small base, and remains under one percent of total traffic. It also arrives with higher purchase intent and higher average order value.

Why it matters for saturation specifically: an assistant does not show a grid of forty thumbnails. It returns a small number of matches, chosen from what is written and structured in the listing. That changes the shape of the competition — there is no visual scanning advantage, and a broad, vague listing has nothing for an assistant to match against. The specificity that already wins in Etsy search is the same specificity that qualifies you here.

Which is the useful conclusion: the response to saturation and the preparation for AI-surface discovery are the same work. If you want the full picture, start with what AI shopping SEO is, and how to measure whether it is working.

Frequently asked questions

Is Etsy too saturated to start in 2026?

Not for a specific product aimed at a buyer you can describe in one sentence. Yes for a general store in a popular category. Seller numbers are growing while buyer numbers are roughly flat, so impressions per listing decline over time and broad positioning has no defence.

How many sellers and buyers does Etsy have?

Etsy has reported roughly 5.7 million active sellers and about 87 million active buyers on the Etsy marketplace, with more than 100 million live listings. That is around 15 buyers per seller, each spending about USD 124 a year across the whole platform.

Is Etsy dying?

The data does not support that. Buyer counts have stopped falling and grew sequentially, spend per buyer rose to about USD 124, and marketplace sales have been growing. The difficulty for individual sellers comes from rising supply, not collapsing demand.

How do I check if an Etsy niche is saturated?

Search your exact keyword on Etsy and read the result count, then look at the first row and the review counts of the shops ranking there. Supply count and competitor quality are both directly observable. Then look the same keyword up in Shop Manager → Stats → Marketplace insights, where Etsy reports its own searches count, competing-listings count, conversion-rate band and median purchase price range for that query.

Yes. Marketplace Insights, inside Shop Manager → Stats, reports how many searches a keyword received, how many listings compete for it, a conversion-rate band and the median purchase price range buyers paid — free, with no minimum sales requirement. The lookups are metered rather than unlimited. What Etsy still does not publish is an open keyword-volume feed or an API for it, so the absolute volume numbers shown inside third-party tools remain modelled estimates.
