How to Write Etsy Product Descriptions That AI Shopping Assistants Understand (Free Template)
Your Etsy description is no longer read only by shoppers. It is also parsed by AI shopping assistants that decide whether to recommend your product, describe it accurately, or skip it entirely. Since February 2026, US shoppers can buy Etsy items directly inside Google AI Mode and the Gemini app, and Etsy products now appear inside ChatGPT Shopping. In every one of those surfaces, your description is the raw material the assistant works from.
This guide gives you the exact structure to use, a full copy-paste template, a before-and-after example, and the five mistakes that make AI assistants ignore a listing.
Short answer
Write your Etsy description in six ordered blocks: a one-sentence plain-language summary, a specifications list, a use-case block, a materials and care block, a shipping and processing block, and a short FAQ. Put the most important facts in the first 200 characters, state every detail as plain text rather than implying it through images, and never rely on emoji, decorative symbols, or all-caps blocks to carry meaning. AI assistants reward listings whose facts are explicit, consistent, and easy to extract.
Why descriptions suddenly matter more than they used to
For years, the Etsy description was treated as a secondary field. Sellers optimised titles and tags for Etsy's internal search, then pasted a block of shop policies below. That approach is now actively costing sales, for three concrete reasons.
1. AI assistants answer in sentences, not thumbnails
When a shopper asks an assistant for "a personalised leather keychain for a dad who fishes, under 30 dollars, ships before Sunday", the assistant has to produce a sentence that justifies each condition. It can only do that if your listing states the material, the personalisation option, the price, and the processing time as retrievable facts. A listing that says "perfect gift!!" gives the assistant nothing to work with.
2. Structured data must match your visible text
Google's own guidance for AI features is consistent on this point: there is no special AI-only markup, and what works is classic SEO fundamentals combined with clear text and structured data that matches what a human can actually see on the page. If your attributes say "cotton" but your description says "linen blend", you have created a contradiction. Assistants resolve contradictions by lowering confidence, and low-confidence listings do not get recommended.
3. The traffic is already moving
Adobe reported that generative-AI referral traffic to retail sites grew 693% during the 2025-26 holiday season. That is not a forecast, it is measured behaviour. Sellers whose listings are readable today are compounding an advantage while everyone else is still writing for 2019 Etsy search.
The six-block description structure
This order is deliberate. It front-loads the facts an assistant needs to match a query, then adds the depth a human needs to feel confident buying.
Block 1 — The one-sentence summary
One sentence, plain language, no marketing adjectives. It should contain the product type, the primary material, the key differentiator, and who it is for. Aim to answer "what is this and who is it for" before the shopper scrolls.
Block 2 — Specifications as a labelled list
Use a real list with explicit labels. Assistants extract label-value pairs far more reliably than prose. Include dimensions in both metric and imperial, weight, material, colour options, and personalisation limits.
Block 3 — Use cases and occasions
This is the block that wins long, conversational queries. Name the occasions, the recipients, and the situations in plain words: Father's Day, retirement gifts, groomsmen, a fishing trip, a first apartment. If you never write the word "anniversary", you cannot be recommended for anniversary queries.
Block 4 — Materials, sourcing, and care
Assistants are increasingly asked qualifying questions: is it hypoallergenic, is it food-safe, is it machine washable, is it vegan, where is it made. Each unanswered question is a filter you silently fail.
Block 5 — Processing and shipping in plain numbers
Write the numbers as text, not only in Etsy's shipping widget: "Made to order in 2 to 3 business days, then shipped from Spain with tracking." Delivery timing is one of the most common conditions in agentic shopping queries.
Block 6 — A three to five question FAQ
Write each question the way a shopper would ask it, then answer it in one or two sentences. This is the single highest-leverage block you can add, because it maps directly onto the question-and-answer format assistants generate.
The copy-paste template
Replace the bracketed parts with your own details. Keep the labels — they are what makes the text machine-readable.

Before and after: a real rewrite
Here is a typical description, and the same product rewritten with the six-block structure.
Before
This gorgeous keychain is the PERFECT gift for any occasion! Made with high quality materials. Personalise it however you like! Fast shipping. Please read shop policies before ordering. Message me with questions!!
An assistant reading this can extract almost nothing: no material, no size, no personalisation limit, no processing time, no recipient. It cannot safely recommend this listing for any specific query.
After
SPECIFICATIONS
Material: solid brass with a stainless steel split ring
Dimensions: 3.8 x 2.5 cm (1.5 x 1 in)
Weight: 18 g
Colours available: natural brass, antiqued brass
Personalisation: yes, up to 12 characters, block or script font
BEST FOR
Father's Day, birthdays, retirement gifts and Christmas stockings. Popular with fishing and hiking enthusiasts, and often bought as a groomsmen gift.
PROCESSING AND SHIPPING
Made to order in 2 business days, then shipped from Portugal with tracking. Typical delivery: 3 to 5 business days domestic, 7 to 12 business days international.
The second version can be matched against a query about material, budget, recipient, occasion, personalisation, and delivery window. That is the entire difference between being recommended and being invisible.
Five mistakes that make assistants skip your listing
- Emoji and symbols carrying meaning. If the only place you indicate "waterproof" is a droplet emoji, that fact does not exist as far as extraction is concerned.
- Shop policies at the top. Returns and processing rules are important, but they are not what identifies your product. Put the product facts first.
- Contradictions between attributes and text. Attributes, title, and description must agree on material, colour, and size. Inconsistency lowers confidence.
- Facts that only exist inside images. Sizing charts, material notes, and care instructions shown only in a photo are not readable text. Repeat them in the description.
- One giant paragraph. Walls of text without headings or lists are much harder to segment. Use labelled blocks.
How to roll this out without rewriting your whole shop
Do not rewrite 200 listings this week. Work in this order:
- Rewrite your top five best-selling listings using the template.
- Wait two to three weeks and compare views, favourites, and conversion against the previous period.
- Roll the winning pattern out to the next twenty listings.
- Add the FAQ block to everything, even listings you do not fully rewrite. It is the cheapest win in the whole process.
- Re-check every listing once a month against the checklist, updating anything seasonal.
Frequently asked questions
Does this hurt my normal Etsy search ranking?
No. Clear, specific, keyword-accurate descriptions serve Etsy's internal search and AI assistants at the same time. What you are removing — emoji walls, vague adjectives, policy text at the top — was never helping your ranking anyway.
How long should an Etsy description be?
Long enough to answer every reasonable question and no longer. In practice that is usually 250 to 500 words with the six blocks. Length is not the ranking factor; completeness is.
Can I use AI to write these descriptions?
Yes, as a drafting assistant, provided you supply the real specifications and you review every claim. Never let a model invent materials, dimensions, or shipping times. Invented facts create exactly the contradictions that damage confidence.
Do I need to add schema markup or code?
Not on Etsy. Etsy controls the page markup, and Google has confirmed there is no AI-specific markup requirement. Your job is to fill Etsy's own fields completely and keep your visible text consistent with them.
Where should I start if I only have an hour?
Add a specifications list and a three-question FAQ to your single best-selling listing, and move your shop policies to the bottom. That alone makes the listing dramatically more extractable.
