Last reviewed: October 2, 2026. If Etsy cannot verify your bank account—or a deposit is returned after Etsy marks it as sent—do not keep changing several account fields. First identify whether the problem is bank verification, a recent bank-detail change, a returned deposit, or a separate Payment account delay.
This guide translates Etsy’s current Help Center instructions into a practical checklist. It does not ask for your bank login, test-deposit code, tax number, or identity documents.
TL;DR
- Name mismatch: the bank holder must match the individual or legal business entity stored on Etsy.
- US account: use Plaid Instant or its Manual test-deposit route when offered.
- Non-US account: verify the small deposit or upload the bank document Etsy requests.
- Bank details changed: expect a separate five-business-day security delay before funds become eligible for deposit.
Bank verification is not the same as a deposit delay
Bank verification confirms that the account belongs to the person or business registered for the shop. A deposit delay describes when eligible funds become available. A Payment account reserve holds a percentage of eligible funds under account-specific terms. A deposit marked sent but not received may require a bank trace. More than one issue can apply at the same time.
1. Confirm the legal name before retrying
Etsy says the name on the bank account must match the individual or legal business entity stored in the shop’s legal and tax information. A sole proprietor should use the matching first and last name. An incorporated business should use the matching legal entity name.
Do not substitute a relative’s or unrelated person’s bank account. If the account holder and Etsy entity do not match, repeated retries can make verification harder instead of fixing it.
2. Use the verification method Etsy assigns
US bank accounts
US sellers generally verify through Plaid. Etsy describes two routes:
- Instant: connect through Plaid and the bank’s authentication flow. Many accounts verify immediately; some smaller banks or credit unions may take three to five business days.
- Manual: enter the electronic routing and account numbers, then wait for a $0.01 test deposit. Etsy says the statement description contains a three-letter code after the # symbol. The deposit can take up to seven days to appear.
Use the electronic routing number, not a wire-routing number, when Etsy requests it.
Non-US bank accounts
For a non-US bank account in the same currency as the shop, Etsy may send a small deposit. It can appear from Etsy, Adyen, Envoy, or Worldpay, usually within two to three business days. Enter the exact deposit amount in Payment settings.
If the bank and shop currencies differ, the small-deposit method fails, or Etsy requires manual review, the account may need a bank document instead.
3. If Etsy requests a bank document
Etsy’s guidance says the document should be a single recent file on the bank’s letterhead and show the account holder’s name plus the relevant account, IBAN, SWIFT, BIC, or routing details. Supported examples include a bank statement in JPG, PNG, or PDF format. Etsy says document review may take approximately five to seven business days.
Upload documents only through Etsy’s official Payment settings flow. Do not send identity or bank documents to strangers, forum users, or unverified support addresses.
4. Expect a security delay after changing bank details
If you change the account number, routing number, or banking institution, Etsy says funds will not be eligible for deposit for five business days, in addition to other delays that may already apply. This security hold does not automatically mean the shop has a Payment account reserve.
The five-day delay generally does not apply when you are only verifying the bank account already on file without changing its details.
5. Watch the verification deadline
For many non-US sellers, verification starts after the first sale. Etsy describes a typical window of 30 days to begin verification and 60 days to complete it, but the notice inside your own Shop Manager is the instruction that controls your account.
Missing the account-specific deadline may result in suspension. Multiple unsuccessful verification attempts may also trigger restrictions. If the instructions are unclear, stop retrying and use Etsy’s official support path.
6. If the deposit was returned
- Open Finances → Payment account and confirm whether the line item says scheduled, sent, returned, or pending.
- Check that the bank account is open and can receive the deposit currency.
- Confirm the account and routing format required in the bank’s country.
- Ask the bank whether it rejected the transfer and request the rejection reason.
- If Etsy asks for updated details, make the change once and complete the assigned verification flow.
- Allow for the five-business-day security delay after a full bank-detail change.
Diagnostic table
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Name mismatch | Bank holder versus Etsy legal or business entity |
| Plaid bank not listed | Use Plaid’s manual option if Etsy offers it |
| No US manual-verification code yet | Wait for the $0.01 deposit and statement code |
| Non-US small deposit missing | Currency, account format, bank processing, or document review |
| Bank details changed successfully | Five-business-day security delay |
| Deposit marked sent but absent | Bank trace, account currency, and rejection reason |
What not to do
- Do not keep changing the legal name, bank country, and account number together.
- Do not guess a test-deposit amount or three-letter code.
- Do not use a bank account owned by an unrelated person.
- Do not upload bank documents outside Etsy’s official verification screen.
- Do not assume every missing deposit is a reserve.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Etsy say my bank verification failed?
Common checks include an account-holder name that does not match Etsy’s legal or tax information, an incorrect account or electronic routing format, an unconfirmed test deposit, or a document that does not show the required bank details. Follow the specific notice in Payment settings rather than guessing.
How long does Plaid manual verification take for Etsy?
Etsy says the $0.01 manual-verification deposit may take several days and can take up to seven days to appear. After it arrives, use the three-letter code shown in the deposit description exactly as Etsy instructs.
Why is my Etsy deposit missing after the bank account was verified?
Verification alone does not make every balance immediately available. Check the deposit schedule, weekends and holidays, deposit minimums, fees, refunds, reserves, pending earnings, and whether Etsy marked the transfer as sent. If it was sent, ask the bank to trace or explain any rejection.
Does changing Etsy bank details create a hold?
Yes. Etsy states that a full bank-detail change creates a five-business-day security delay before funds become eligible for deposit. This delay is separate from a Payment account reserve and from normal bank processing after a deposit is sent.
Can I use someone else’s bank account for Etsy Payments?
The bank account should belong to the same individual or legal business entity stored for the shop. Using an unrelated person’s account can create a name mismatch and is not a safe workaround for verification.
What should I do after several failed verification attempts?
Stop changing multiple fields and review the latest Etsy notice. Repeated unsuccessful attempts may result in restrictions. Confirm the legal name, bank format, currency, and assigned verification route, then use Etsy’s official support path if the next step remains unclear.
